Movie Trailer Critique

P1T8 Young and Brokenhearted from Kapaa Middle School MEDIA on Vimeo.

The latest project that Mr.Sanderl that assigned the G.T. class was to make a movie trailer that was appropriate enough for elementary students. My teammates were Miles Frazier, Lilio masi, and Ehu Keala. Mostly everyone in that G.T. class wrote stories for a project for their English class. So somebody's story from each team would have to be made into a movie trailer. My team and I decided to do a movie trailer on Lilio's story, Young and Brokenhearted. The main characters were Ziggy Twisty played by Miles Frazier and Malia Hessenheffer played by ... me! Before we started filming, we made a trailer plan. So that we mainly plan everything that would be put in the movie trailer and not get stuck on what to do next. I contributed into this project by playing a roll as Malia Hessenheffer and I helped out on the trailer plan.

The requirements for this project were to be 1 minute and 30 seconds to 2 minutes and 30 seconds long, have foley, have dialogue, have a voice acting script, have text layovers, have effects, have 5 scenes, have a movie poster created and finished, and a finished trailer plan. My team and I did not complete all of the requirements because we didn't really use our time wisely. Our trailer was about 10 seconds less than the minimum requirement and on some of the scenes we didn't have foley or background music for. Those were the only requirements we did not fully finish. If my team and I could go back in time, we would've finished our trailer plan as soon as possible and worked on our movie trailer the next day.

The class critiqued my teams and I movie trailer in 3 categories, audience, creativity, and requirements. The grading was room for improvement, satisfactory, and above & beyond. I actually agree on how the class graded us on audience because it would actually relate to most of the elementary students in most ways. I agree on most of the grades that the class gave us on creativity because I think the story we chose to make a movie trailer on is quite creative. For requirements, I agree on how the class graded us because we did not fully complete all the requirements, but we did most of them. After finishing the project, I've learned that it is to never take time for granted. I've also learned to stay focus and stay on task or else the project will fall apart. Overall the making of this project was an amazing eperience and I would love to do it again!

Movie Poster Promo

The next project that was assigned for the G.T. class was to create a movie trailer and move poster for elementary students to see. The title for the movie that my team and I agreed on was "Young and Broken Hearted". The main character in the movie is Miles Frazier playing as Ziggy Twisty. Ziggy is a freshman and he is experiencing his first year in high school. He gets bullied and teased, the first day of high school was nothing what he thought it would be like. In my movie poster Ziggy is depressed due to what he has been going through his first week of high school.

The title of my movie poster, "Young and Broken Hearted", practically tells you what the movie is about. Ziggy is a young freshman and goes through a very tough first year of high school. But then he meets a very special someone, but it all takes a turn on him. Now he is broken hearted. So that is mainly why my team and I chose to title our movie that we are making "Young and Broken Hearted". In my movie poster I used a lot of effect and one of the most important one is kerning. Kerning is the process of adjusting the space between letters. Kerning is very useful when editing your title for a movie poster because it makes your title more appealing and makes your title stand out.

After I put all of the different layer effect and filters onto my movie poster, it was a huge transformation from the original image. I thought that the effects made the main character stood out a lot more. The effects on the title and information stood out as well. Every effect that was added related to what the movie was actually about. To me it seemed like an actual movie poster you would see at the movie theaters!

Proactive or Procrastination?

To be honest I am a procrastinator, sadly. I'm not really proud of it, but I seem to be able to manage my GPA to be at an average of 3.66. I am a procrastinator because I seem to always do most of my homework and projects at the last minute. I get distracted very easily by social media, games, and TV. But  I seem to always turn in my work the next day on time.

I actually have a lot of free time after school, but I guess I'm just lazy to do any work. Usually when I get home from school I just eat and go on the internet. I usually do my homework at 9:00 pm and usually finish at 10:00 pm or 11:00 pm; it's becoming a routine for me. If I have homework during the weekends, I do it on Sunday at the usually time. It usually depends on what assignment I need to do. If I understand it and know what to do, I do it at the last minute. But if I don't understand it and don't know what to do, I work on it the minute I come home from school or when I have free time. So I'm mostly a procrastinator but just a little proactive.

Honestly I really hate being a procrastinator. I always think to myself, "Okay Leslie get your stuff together and start doing your homework early so you can have more free time". But then I get distracted. If I were to change my work habits is to do my homework or projects as soon as possible. I would change my work habits by using my time more wisely and by slowly taking small steps into being more proactive. For example, I could start doing my homework at 8:00 pm, then 7:00 pm, and so on. By doing that, I'll for sure get a lot more sleep!

My Visual Poem

For G.T. the class was given to do a visual poem. A visual poem is poetry that is shown by videos, pictures, or art. I chose to do my visual poem on memories because throughout life we make a lot of happy and sad memories so I thought to myself, why not make a poem about it? The visuals that I put into this video made an impact on my poem by showing and explaining to the audience what the poem really means. It also gives them a better vision on what the poem is mainly about.

The overall effects that I put into this video affect the overall meaning by showing them that memories are sentimental moments that can never be forgotten. The effects also give a more meaningful meaning to my poem. I put the effects to get the audience to feel the same way of the poem's mood, meaningful. This poem that I made was meant to actually relate to you and what memories you make throughout life.

I am somewhat satisfied with my final visual poem because it's not exactly what I thought it would turn out to be but it's close enough. I wished I used my time more wisely and get better footage. I should've started getting footage for my visual poem as soon as I had a thought about what I wanted for my visual poem. I also missed a couple of days of school, which got me behind but I'm happy with what I made with the time I had.

Finished News Story

The HikiNo project that I did with my team for G.T. is about one of my teammates, Kaylynn Drake, and her family tradition of fireknife dancing.  Kaylynn is actually the first female on Kaua'i to fireknife dance going against Samoan tradition.  My team and I thought that Kaylynn and her family tradition was great to make a story out of. My teammates were Kaylynn Drake, Haley Gokan, and Sydney Nice. We got inverviews of Kaylynn Drake, Emmsley-James Drake (her older brother), and Michael-Alan Drake (her other older brother). We also got a really cool picture of Kaylynn and her brothers that were taken by Dennis Fujimoto. The team also took the time to go to two of Kaylynn's live shows and took some really cool videos and shots.

I think the final turned out to be a lot more interesting than I thought it would be. I definitely didn't think it would get the most votes. My team and I are proud of what we have made. It was a great experience to watch the final on HikiNo. This was my first time doing this and in the end I was part of the team who made the video that go to be on TV. Overall, my team and I worked very hard and that hard work paid off. I am proud and happy of my team most of all.

When my teams news story was critqued by our classmates, I was pretty suprised at the results. For my teams and I news story 31% of the class gave us a three and 69% of the class gave us a four. But in the end of the of the results ,  38% of the class voted for my teams news story; which got the most votes. So my teams news story ended up on being HikiNo!

Real World Report

The story that interested me the most is called "Surfer Attack 'More Likely' By White Shark". This article is about a 23 year-old surfer, Sean Pollard, and he has lost his arm and his other hand at Western Australia south coast at Wylie Bay on Thursday morning, October 3, 2014. Pollard was sent to Royal Perth hospital for an emergency surgery. Authorities say that he was bitten by a great white shark. Prayers and thoughts are said for Pollard from his friends and family.

This is a picture of a Great White Shark.
Showing it's features can tell what kind of
damage this shark can do.
My opinion about this story is that I think that if it was a great white shark who bit Pollard, I think he was lucky enough to only have lost an arm and hand. Great white sharks are killing machines with just by biting one time. Especially since great white sharks don't like humans swimming in their domain. I'm glad that Pollard was not injured that severely and that he came out of the water still alive. My prayers and thoughts go out for Pollard and his family.

I think people should care about this story because lots and lots of people are in the water. Sharks are mostly everywhere in the ocean, so there's a high chance of anyone getting injured or might lose their life. It can be any type of shark, depending where you are. So this story is like a warning for anyone who swims, surfs, and etc. to watch out for what may come for you in the water, anything can happen. But I ask for you to watch out for what may hit you in your life at anytime, life is full of surprises.

Lessons Learned

For this project that Mr. Sanderl assigned the class for HikiNo is actually more fun than I thought it was going to be. I think the most interesting part of this project would probably have to be working with my team and going out in the community while filming our project and interviews. It's my first time doing this and I have to say it's been a pretty fun experience so far.

I think the biggest roadblock for our team so far would have to be checking our schedules and meeting up together to film. Due to everyone having lots of stuff going on at the moment but we were able to meet up all together at least once. And that meet up went perfectly fine, I'm glad my team and I were able to get pull through.

I think the most valuable part of this filming process would probably have to be the flow of every shot and all of the film put together. I think that's the most valuable part of this filming process because you basically don't want your audience to get lost and not know what's going on. Plus if we get a good flow and process of all our films, we're more closer to being on channel 9 ;).
